You will end up with a footer that has your own content in a widget area, a copyright line you wrote, and spacing and colours that match your brand. A widget is a small block of content, such as text, a list of links or a search box, that you place in a widget area.

  • Know what you want in the footer: an About note, useful links, contact details.
  • Footer links go in a widget. Reign has no footer menu location.
  • Pick your palette first if you can. The footer colours follow it. See colour palette.
  1. Go to Appearance > Widgets.
  2. Open the Footer Widget Area.
  3. Add blocks such as Paragraph, Navigation or Search. Select Update when done.

Every Wbcom plugin also adds blocks you can place here, such as BuddyNext’s recent activity, Learnomy’s popular courses or Eventonomy’s upcoming events. Add them on Appearance > Widgets: the Customizer’s widget screens show classic widget forms, where blocks are not offered.

The footer widget area only shows on your site once it has at least one widget. Reign has no setting for the number of columns. Add the widgets, view the result, and adjust the content until the row looks balanced.

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize > Footer > Copyright.
  2. Keep Enable Footer Copyright on. Every other control here only works while it is on.
  3. Edit Copyright Text. It accepts HTML, so you can add a link such as <a href="/privacy/">Privacy Policy</a>. You can keep these placeholders: [current_year], [site_title] and [theme_author]. The default text is “© [current_year] - [site_title] | Theme by [theme_author]”.
  4. Set Alignment to Left, Right or Center. Center is the default.
  5. Select Publish.
  1. Go to Appearance > Customize > Footer > Footer Area.
  2. Set Widget Title Typography and Content Typography for the headings and text in the widgets.
  3. Use the Footer Padding fields for the space above, below and beside the widgets. The defaults are 70px at the top and bottom.
  4. In the Copyright section, the Padding fields do the same for the copyright bar. The defaults are 20px at the top and bottom.

Colours are not in the Footer panel. Go to Appearance > Customize > Color Options > Individual Colors and look for Footer Background Color, Footer Text Color, Footer Link Color and Copyright Background Color. Dark mode has its own set under Dark Mode Colors.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of your site and check the widgets and copyright line.
  2. Switch the Customizer to the phone view to see how the footer stacks.
  3. If you use dark mode, check the footer in both modes.
  4. Click every link you added.
  • No footer widgets show. The area has no widgets. Add one under Appearance > Widgets.
  • The copyright bar is missing. Enable Footer Copyright is off.
  • A colour did not change. Footer colours live under Color Options, not in the Footer panel.
  • My HTML shows as text. The Copyright Text box is plain HTML, with no toolbar. Check your tags are closed.
