Editing a Post After You Submit It

BuddyPress Member Blog overviewFree + ProGet BuddyPress Member Blog →

A post you have already published, submitted for review, or had sent back opens in the same composer as a new post. The top of the form and the buttons change so it is always clear what saving will do.

  1. Go to your blog home and pick the tab the post is on: Published, Drafts or Pending.
  2. Press Edit on the post’s card.

The page is headed Edit post.

The top of the form shows a Live label (or Private for a private post), a View post link that opens the article in a new tab, and when it was last updated.

Button What it does
Update Saves your changes to the live post. It stays on the site.
Unpublish Takes the post off the site and moves it to your Drafts, with your latest changes. It asks you to confirm first; choose Keep it live to cancel.
Preview Shows your edited version before you update.

There is no Save Draft button on a live post, so saving can never take it down by accident.

Editing a published post does not send it back for review, even on a site that reviews member posts. It was approved once and stays live while you correct it. (A site owner can change this; see Reviewing member submissions.)

After Update the page shows Post Updated! with a View post link. After Unpublish it shows Post unpublished: readers can no longer see it, and it is in your drafts.

While you edit a published post, autosave keeps your work in a separate saved copy. The status reads Unpublished changes saved at and a time. Readers keep seeing the live version until you press Update.

If you close the tab before updating, the next time you open the post a banner says You have unpublished changes from a time:

  • Restore puts those changes back in the editor. They are still not live; press Update to publish them.
  • Discard or the X closes the banner. The live post is untouched, and the banner is not offered again for those changes.

The top of the form shows a Pending review label and a line saying an editor will review it before it goes live.

Button What it does
Update submission Saves your changes. The post stays in the review queue.
Move to drafts Takes the post out of the review queue and back to your Drafts. It asks you to confirm first; choose Keep it in review to cancel.
Preview Shows your edited version.

After Update submission the page says Submission updated with a See it in Pending link. Reviewers are not notified again for each edit.

If you are allowed to publish directly (for example you are an editor), you see Publish instead of Update submission.

When an editor sends your post back, it returns to your Drafts tab with a Sent back label and the start of their note on its card.

Open it and the full note sits at the top of the form under What to change before you submit it again, with who sent it back and when. Make the changes, then press Submit for Review. The note goes away once the post is back in review.

On sites running Pro with notifications on, you are also emailed the reason.
