The Medium Editor is a clean writing surface with no toolbar in the way. Formatting appears only when you select text, and a short row of buttons under the writing area inserts images, videos, links, dividers and code. It suits communities that mostly write text.

The site owner chooses the editor for everyone under WB Plugins > Member Blog > Editor > Active editor (the option is Medium Editor (Inline)). See Choosing the writing experience. Members cannot switch editors themselves.

Click in the writing area and type. A hint under it reads Select text to format it.

Select any text and a floating toolbar appears above it:

Button Does
Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough Styles the selected text.
Link Asks for a link (Paste or type a link). Tick Open in new tab if you want that.
H2, H3 Turns the paragraph into a heading.
Quote Turns the paragraph into a blockquote.
Bulleted list, Numbered list Turns the selection into a list.
Image Opens the media library and inserts the image you pick.
Horizontal rule Inserts a divider.
Code Wraps the selection as code.
Remove formatting Clears styles from the selection.

Keyboard shortcuts: Cmd/Ctrl+B for bold, Cmd/Ctrl+I for italic, Cmd/Ctrl+U for underline.

Web addresses you type become links automatically. Text you paste from another page keeps its basic formatting but loses stray styles and classes.

These buttons sit under the writing area and are always visible:

Button Does
Image Opens the media library to upload or pick an image, and inserts it with its caption.
Video Asks for a video or media link and adds it on its own line. A message says it becomes a player when you preview or publish. Any provider WordPress can embed works. A link that is not a full address starting with http:// or https:// is refused.
Link Asks for a link and inserts it, using the selected text as the link text.
Divider Inserts a horizontal divider.
Code Wraps selected text as code, or inserts an empty code block.

Images added this way go through the WordPress media library, so they follow the site’s normal media upload rules.
