What Readers See on a Series Post

Pro. This feature requires WB Member Blog Pro. The free plugin must be installed and active first. See the Pro index for every Pro module.

When a post belongs to a series, readers get three things: a line telling them which part they are on, a navigation bar to move between parts, and, if you add it, a table of contents. This page describes each one and the settings that control them.

Above the post content, a short line reads Part 2 of 5 in followed by the series name, linked to the series page. It appears only when the series has at least two published parts.

It follows the Show Navigation on Posts setting. Turn that setting off and the line goes too.

The bar sits directly under the article, before the clap and save bar, the author box and related posts, so the next part is the first thing a reader reaches. Choose Before Content or Both in Navigation Position to also show it above the article.

Parts are numbered from 1. Posts in the same series are left out of the related-posts strip, because the navigation already links to them.

Set the style in Default Navigation Style on the Series tab.

Style What readers see
Buttons A compact bar with Prev and Next links.
Numbers “Part X of Y” and a numbered link for every part, with the current part highlighted.
Arrows “Part X of Y” with larger Previous and Next arrow links.

On the first part there is no previous link, and on the last part there is no next link.

The table of contents is a numbered list of every published part, with the current part highlighted. It is not added to posts automatically. Place it with the [bp-member-blog-series-toc] shortcode or the Series Table of Contents block, for example in a sidebar or at the top of each part. See Series Pages, Shortcodes and Blocks.

When a reader scrolls about three quarters of the way through a part, that part is marked as read.

  • Logged-in readers: progress is saved to their account and follows them across devices. It shows on the series page (“2 of 5 parts read”, Continue Reading) and on series cards in the series list.
  • Visitors who are not logged in: with Guest Progress Tracking on, progress is kept in their own browser only. It does not carry over to another browser or device.

Turn Enable Progress Tracking off to stop recording progress for logged-in readers and hide it from the series page, the series list and the table of contents. Turn Guest Progress Tracking off to do the same for visitors.

If your theme needs the navigation somewhere specific:

  1. Turn Show Navigation on Posts off on the Series tab.
  2. Add the Series Navigation block or [bp-member-blog-series-nav] shortcode where you want it, for example in a single-post template.
Problem What to check
No navigation on a post The post is in a series, the series has another published part, and Show Navigation on Posts is on.
Parts in the wrong order Reorder them from Settings > Series (members) or set Order in series on each post.
A part is missing Only published posts are listed. Drafts, pending and scheduled posts appear once they are published.
