BuddyPress Integration Overview

MediaVerse overviewFree + ProGet MediaVerse →

BuddyPress and BuddyNext are alternatives, not a stack. Run one or the other - they cannot be active at the same time. If your site uses BuddyNext instead, see BuddyNext Integration, which covers the same MediaVerse features through that path.

Included in Free - MediaVerse is the most complete media solution for BuddyPress communities. Integration is optional - the plugin works standalone on any WordPress site, but when BuddyPress is active, it unlocks profile tabs, group media, activity stream, and notifications automatically.

MediaVerse integrates with BuddyPress to add media features directly into the BuddyPress social layer. The integration is automatic - no configuration needed. It activates when BuddyPress is active and gracefully skips all BP-specific code when BuddyPress is not installed.

  • BuddyPress (BuddyBoss, which is BuddyPress-compatible, also works)
  • MediaVerse 1.0.0+ (2.6.2 or later for the comment mirroring, gallery tiles and group fixes described in this section)
  • PHP 8.1 or newer (MediaVerse 2.6.2 raised the minimum from 7.4)

The database update refreshes the privacy of your BuddyPress activity posts and adds indexes to mvs_media_meta and mvs_messages. It can take a moment on large sites. Updates run one at a time and continue where they stopped if interrupted.

BuddyPress Component Feature Added
Activity Records activity on media upload, comment, and album additions
Member Profiles Adds a Media tab showing the member’s uploads
Groups Adds a Media tab in group navigation
Notifications Adds MediaVerse notifications to the BuddyPress bell: reactions, comments, @mentions, follows, favourites and more
Activity Post Form Adds a media attach button to the activity update form

The integration loads via BuddyPressManager::init(), which is called on plugins_loaded. Every feature check begins with:

if ( ! function_exists( 'buddypress' ) ) {
return;
}

Individual features additionally check bp_is_active( 'activity' ), bp_is_active( 'groups' ), and bp_is_active( 'notifications' ) before hooking.

The BuddyPress integration works on WordPress Multisite networks. Activity and notifications are scoped to the site where BuddyPress is installed. Media uploaded on a subsite is recorded in that subsite’s activity stream.
