Note Lifecycle
This page explains how a note behaves from creation to deletion.
Creating a note
Section titled “Creating a note”When a learner opens the note icon on a lesson and saves, LMS Notes stores a new note and links it to:
- The content the learner was viewing (the course, lesson, topic, or quiz).
- The parent course of that content, so instructors can find it by course.
- The learner’s user account as the author.
Any labels entered are created (if new) and attached to the note.
One note per content item
Section titled “One note per content item”Each learner has a single note per content item. When the icon is opened on a lesson that the learner has already noted, the existing note and its labels load into the editor. Saving again updates that note rather than creating a duplicate.
Editing a note
Section titled “Editing a note”Notes can be edited in two places:
- In-context - reopen the note icon on the same lesson and change the title, body, or labels.
- From the notes list - use the edit action on the My Notes or All Notes page to update the title and body inline, or open the note’s editor modal.
Viewing a single note
Section titled “Viewing a single note”Each note has its own page. Access is restricted:
- Learners can view only their own notes.
- Instructors and group leaders can view notes belonging to students in their courses/groups.
- Admins can view all notes.
- Logged-out visitors are redirected to the home page.
Deleting a note
Section titled “Deleting a note”Notes can be deleted individually (trash action on the list) or in bulk (select multiple notes, choose Delete Selected, and apply). Deleting a note also clears its cached copy so lists stay accurate.
