Installing Academic References
Academic References is a citation and reference management plugin for WordPress. It lets you build a reference library, auto-cite sources from a DOI, PubMed ID, ISBN, or URL, insert citations and bibliographies with Gutenberg blocks or shortcodes, and format everything in any of 10,000+ CSL citation styles.

Install from the WordPress admin
Section titled “Install from the WordPress admin”- In your dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Academic References.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
Install by uploading the ZIP
Section titled “Install by uploading the ZIP”- Download the plugin ZIP file.
- Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
- Choose the ZIP file and click Install Now.
- Click Activate.
What activation sets up
Section titled “What activation sets up”On activation the plugin registers:
- A References custom post type (public archive at
/references/). - Two taxonomies for organizing references: Reference Categories and Reference Tags.
- A top-level References menu in wp-admin.
- Default settings, including a default citation style.
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- Open References in the admin sidebar to see your library.
- Go to References > Settings to choose your default citation style and display options.
