Give a PeepSo group its own wpForo forum. The group gets a Forum tab, and group privacy decides who can read and who can post.

Group forums need PeepSo Groups and the Enable group forums setting (on by default) under PeepSo > Configuration > wpForo > Group forums.

Group owners and managers:

  1. Open the group and go to Settings.
  2. In the Group forum row, click Create forum.

The forum takes the group’s name and description and opens straight away in the group’s Forum tab. It is added to the category set in Category for group forums. If you leave that on Create “Groups” automatically, a Groups category is created on the main board the first time.

Once the group has a forum, the row shows an Open forum button instead.

  1. In wp-admin, add or edit a forum in wpForo.
  2. In the PeepSo box, enter the group’s slug or ID in PeepSo group slug or ID. The slug is the last part of the group’s address, for example portland-makers.
  3. Save the forum.
  • A group has one forum, and a forum belongs to one group. Linking replaces any forum the group had.
  • Leave the field empty to unlink the forum.
  • A forum that leaves a closed or secret group (unlinked, replaced, or its group deleted) is never opened up. Its wpForo access is set to “No access” for every usergroup except Admin and Moderator, and you see a notice naming the forum. Open it again from the forum’s permissions when you are ready. If you link it to a group again before changing its access, its earlier access comes back.
  • If nothing matches, you see “No PeepSo group matches that slug or ID, so the forum’s group was not changed.”
  • A linked forum shows “Shown in the Forum tab of” with a link to the group.

Forums on any board can be linked this way. Forums created from the group are always on the main board.

Group type Who can read the forum Who can post
Open Everyone, including guests (in the forums) Group members
Closed Group members Group members
Secret Group members Group members
  • For closed and secret groups, non-members cannot see the forum anywhere in wpForo: forum index, recent posts, search, widgets and direct links.
  • Banned members can read an open group’s forum but cannot post.
  • Site admins can always read and post.
  • wpForo’s own usergroup permissions still apply on top of these rules.
  • A new forum created for a closed or secret group gives guests no access in wpForo. One created for an open group gives guests read-only access.

The tab shows wpForo’s forum page: topic list, paging and, for members who can post, the new-topic form. wpForo’s menu bar, footer and share buttons are hidden inside the group, because the group page is the navigation.

Visitors who can read but not post see a short message:

Visitor Message
Guest “Log in and join this group to start a topic.” with a Log in link
Logged-in non-member “Join this group to start a topic.” with a Go to the group link
Banned member “You can read this forum, but you cannot post in this group.”

The Forum tab appears only for groups that have a forum, and only to people who can read it. PeepSo still decides which group tabs guests see. If your PeepSo setup hides a group’s inner tabs from guests, guests read an open group’s forum on your wpForo pages instead.

  • New topics and replies in a group forum post to the group’s stream, under the group’s privacy. See Usage > Activity and Notifications.
  • A new topic also tells the group’s followers, the same way PeepSo does for group posts.
  • Forum notifications follow the same read rules. Members who cannot read the forum are not notified.

Under PeepSo > Configuration > wpForo > Group forums:

  • Enable group forums - on or off for the whole site.
  • Group tab label - the group tab name. Default: Forum.
  • Category for group forums - where new group forums are created on the main board.

Copy these files from the plugin’s templates/wpforo/ folder to yourtheme/peepso/wpforo/ and edit the copies:

  • group-forum.php - the group’s Forum tab.
  • group-settings.php - the Group forum row in group Settings.
