Let Members Organize Friends into Custom Lists
Friend Lists let your members organize their BuddyPress connections into named private groups. A member might create lists like “Colleagues,” “Classmates,” or “Family” and add specific friends to each. They can then filter their BuddyPress activity stream to show only posts from members in a chosen list.
This feature is disabled by default. Enable it in WB Plugins → Auto Friends → Friend Lists.
What members can do
Section titled “What members can do”- Create custom friend lists with a name of their choosing.
- Add or remove friends from each list.
- Filter the BuddyPress activity stream by a specific friend list.
Lists are always private - no one else can see another member’s lists or their contents.
Accessing Friend Lists
Section titled “Accessing Friend Lists”When the feature is enabled and a member qualifies for access, a Friend Lists tab appears under the Friends section of their BuddyPress profile.
Navigate to: Profile → Friends → Friend Lists
Creating a Friend List
Section titled “Creating a Friend List”- Go to your profile and click the Friends tab.
- Click Friend Lists.
- Click Add Friend List.
- Enter a name for the list in the dialog.
- Click Save.
The new list appears in the Friend Lists screen with a member count of zero.
Managing members in a list
Section titled “Managing members in a list”- Click Manage members next to the list you want to edit.
- A modal opens showing current members and a search box for adding more.
- Use the search box to find a member by name.
- Click Add to add them to the list.
- Click the remove icon to remove a member.
Only existing BuddyPress friends can be added to a list. The suggestion panel shows your current friends only - it never shows strangers.
Editing and deleting a list
Section titled “Editing and deleting a list”- Click Edit list to rename the list.
- Click the delete icon (X) to permanently delete the list and all its members.
Filtering activity by list
Section titled “Filtering activity by list”When a friend list exists, a filter option for that list appears in the BuddyPress activity stream navigation. Click the list name to see only activity from members in that list.
On BuddyBoss Platform, these filter tabs on a member’s profile activity feed require BuddyBoss’s Activity Tabs feature to be turned on. If Activity Tabs are off, the lists still function for organizing friends - only the per-list activity stream filter is suppressed.
List limits
Section titled “List limits”The admin controls the maximum number of lists each member can create. The default is 5. See Friend Lists Tab for how to change this.
