Creating and Managing Lists
Create a list
Section titled “Create a list”- Open your BuddyPress or BuddyBoss profile.
- Go to the Lists tab and choose Add Lists. The button uses your site’s word for lists, so it may read differently.
- Type a List Name. This is the only required field. Names can be up to 190 characters.
- Optionally add a Description, and switch on Make Private if the list should not be public.
- Choose Create list.
You are taken to the new list’s page, where you add people and images. You are on the list yourself as its owner.
The list gets a web address built from its name, for example a list called “Close Friends” lives at /lists/close-friends/. If that address is taken, a number is added to the end. A name with no usable letters, such as one written only in emoji, gets a short random address.
If the site owner has set a limit, you are stopped when you reach it, and the message says what the limit is. Not every member can create lists: the site owner can limit it by role and member type. If you cannot, the Add button is not shown on your Lists tab.
Add and remove people
Section titled “Add and remove people”- Open the list and choose Members.
- In Add people, type a name to search the community, or pick someone from Suggested.
- Choose Add next to the person.
To remove someone, choose the remove button on their row. The owner cannot be removed.
Search matches names only. You must be logged in to search, and it is limited to 60 searches a minute. Adding and removing people is limited to 60 changes a minute. If a limit is reached you are asked to wait a moment.
If the list is full, the message says “This list is full” and how many people it can hold. The site owner sets that number.
People you add may be notified, depending on the site’s Notifications settings.
Set a cover image and icon
Section titled “Set a cover image and icon”On the list page, choose Add a cover image or Add a list icon. Once an image is set, the labels read Change cover image and Change list icon. The cover also has a remove control.
- Allowed types: JPG, PNG and GIF.
- Largest size: 5 MB, or less if your server allows less.
- Only the owner or an administrator can change these images.
Without a cover, the list shows a generated cover. Without an icon, it shows a tile with the first letter of the list name.
Edit a list
Section titled “Edit a list”From the list page, choose Edit list, either on the banner or in the options menu. From your Lists tab, choose Edit next to the list. Change the name, description or privacy and choose Save changes.
Whether you can change a list between public and private after creating it depends on the site owner’s setting.
Delete a list
Section titled “Delete a list”- From the list page, open the options menu and choose Delete list. From your Lists tab, use the delete button on the list.
- In the Confirm Delete window, choose Delete.
This deletes the list, its people, its followers and its images. The people themselves are not affected. It cannot be undone. Only the owner or an administrator can delete a list.
Message someone on a list
Section titled “Message someone on a list”Choose the Message link on a person’s row. It opens your messages screen with that person already filled in. It is not shown on your own row, and it is hidden when the site has the Messages component switched off.
Share a list
Section titled “Share a list”Choose Copy link from the options menu. The Invite by link window gives you the address and share buttons for Facebook, X and LinkedIn. A private list can only be opened by people who are allowed in.
Who can create and change lists
Section titled “Who can create and change lists”- Creating: the site owner limits this by role and member type. Administrators can always create lists.
- Adding and removing people, and editing the details: set by Adding members under Visibility. Only the person who made the list, the owner and their friends, or only administrators (the owner is then not allowed either).
- Images and deleting: the owner or an administrator, whatever that setting says.
Administrators can manage any list.
