Posting a Check-in

Adding a location to an activity update takes a few clicks. You must be logged in, and the site must have a valid Google Maps API key set.

From the activity stream

1. Go to the activity stream and click the “what’s new” box.
2. Click the map-pin icon (tooltip “Add a place”) on the activity form to open the location panel.
3. In the box labelled “Start typing your location…”, type a place name or address. Pick a suggestion from the Google autocomplete list. A small map preview appears for the selected spot.
4. Leave “Add this location to Check-ins tab” ticked to keep the place in your profile Check-ins tab, or untick it to check in without saving it there. It is ticked by default.
5. Write your message and post the update.

Your activity now shows your text followed by an “-at [location]” link that opens the place in Google Maps, and a small embedded map may appear below it.

In a group

The same icon and panel appear on a group’s activity form. A group check-in reads “[you] checked-in in the group [group name]” and shows in both the group activity and your own activity.

Editing a check-in

On communities where BuddyPress activity editing is available, editing the activity reopens the location panel with the saved place, so you can change or clear the location. Where activity editing is not available, delete the post and create a new one with the correct location.

Tips

• Be specific. “Times Square, New York” resolves better than “New York”.
• Business names and landmarks often match more precisely than a raw street address.
