Feature Overview
BuddyPress Check-ins adds location sharing to the BuddyPress (and BuddyBoss) activity stream. Here is what the free plugin does.
Location on activity updates
Section titled “Location on activity updates”A map-pin icon appears on the “what’s new” activity form when a valid API key is set. Clicking it opens a panel where the member types a location and picks a suggestion from Google Places autocomplete. Posting the update appends an “-at [location]” link to the activity content that opens the place in Google Maps.
Check-in activity type
Section titled “Check-in activity type”A check-in is posted as its own activity type (“Check-ins Update”), so it reads as “[member] checked-in”, and “[member] checked-in in the group [group]” for group posts. This type is registered across the activity, member, group, and member-groups streams.
Group check-ins
Section titled “Group check-ins”Members can add a location when posting into a group’s activity. The check-in shows in both the group’s activity and the member’s own activity.
Embedded map
Section titled “Embedded map”Below a check-in in the activity stream, the plugin can embed a Google map iframe pointing at the checked-in place, resolved to a formatted address through the Geocoding and Maps Embed APIs.
Check-ins profile tab
Section titled “Check-ins profile tab”Members get a profile tab (default label “Check-ins”) listing the places they saved to the tab, each with the location, how long ago the visit was, a link to the original activity, and a delete control. The list is paginated. See The Check-ins Tab.
Location profile field
Section titled “Location profile field”If the XProfile component is active, the plugin manages a “Location” extended-profile field and can hide it site wide from a setting. When a member sets it, the value renders as a link to Google Maps.
Compatibility
Section titled “Compatibility”- Works with BuddyPress and BuddyBoss Platform.
- Adapts to BuddyBoss and to Youzer/Youzify activity walls where present.
- Supports editing a check-in’s location inline on setups where BuddyPress activity editing is available.

Section titled “Not in the free plugin”Group location fields, maps on member and group directories, XProfile location mapping, and OpenStreetMap support are part of BuddyPress Check-ins Pro.
