What is Comment Moderation?
Section titled “What is Comment Moderation?”Comment Moderation allows community members to report inappropriate comments on activity updates. Just like activity posts, this feature provides a Flag/Unflag button on each comment, enabling members to notify administrators about comments that violate community guidelines.

Why Do You Need This?
Section titled “Why Do You Need This?”For Site Administrators:
Section titled “For Site Administrators:”- Targeted moderation: Address problematic comments without affecting the entire activity thread
- Conversation quality: Maintain healthy discussions by removing toxic comments
- Thread protection: Keep good discussions clean by filtering out spam or abusive replies
- Separate tracking: Manage comment reports independently from activity reports
For Community Members:
Section titled “For Community Members:”- Protect discussions: Report comments that derail or pollute conversations
- Quick response: Flag inappropriate replies without reporting the entire post
- Contextual reporting: Address specific problematic comments in otherwise good threads
- Safer engagement: Feel confident participating when you can flag abusive responses
How It Works

Section titled “Flagging a Comment”-
Locate the Comment
- Browse activity updates and their comments
- Find the specific comment you want to report
- Look for the “Flag” or “Submit Report” option next to the comment

Report the Comment
- Click the “Flag” or “Submit Report” button
- A popup appears asking for the report reason:
- Spam or Scam
- Inappropriate Content
- Harassment or Bullying
- Hate Speech
- Off-topic or Trolling
- Other (with description)
- Select the reason and click “Submit Report”

Confirmation
- Success message appears
- Button changes to “Unflag” or “Retract Report”
- Comment may be hidden based on admin settings
Unflagging a Comment
Section titled “Unflagging a Comment”To retract your report:
- Find the comment you flagged
- Click “Unflag” or “Retract Report”
- Your report is removed from the moderation queue
For Site Administrators
Section titled “For Site Administrators”Enabling Comment Moderation
Section titled “Enabling Comment Moderation”- Navigate to WordPress Admin → Moderation Pro → Settings
- Go to “General Settings” tab
- Under “Select Components”, check “Activity Comment”
- Click “Save Changes”
Configuring Comment Settings
Section titled “Configuring Comment Settings”Go to Moderation Pro → Activity Comment tab:
Button Text Customization:
- Submit Report: Text for the flag button (default: “Flag”)
- Retract Report: Text for unflag button (default: “Unflag”)
Hide Mode Options:
- Hide from reporter only: Only the reporter sees the comment hidden
- Hide from all site members: All members (except admins) cannot see the flagged comment
- Don’t hide: Comment remains visible to everyone until admin reviews
Automatic Moderation:
- Enable/Disable: Toggle automatic comment hiding
- Moderation Limit: Number of reports before auto-hide (e.g., 2 reports for comments since they’re typically shorter than activities)
Author Consequences: When someone’s comment is flagged repeatedly:
- Disable commenting: Prevent user from posting new comments
- Disable all activity: Stop all activity creation (more severe)
- Both restrictions: Apply complete activity restrictions
Reviewing Flagged Comments
Section titled “Reviewing Flagged Comments”-
Go to WordPress Admin → Moderation Pro → Activity Comments

View the moderation table showing:
- Comment Content: Text of the flagged comment
- Comment Author: Who wrote the comment
- Activity Context: The activity update the comment was posted on
- Activity Author: Original post creator
- Reporter(s): Members who flagged this comment
- Report Count: Total flags received
- Report Reason: Why it was reported
- Date: When the comment and reports were made
- Status: Current moderation state

Actions Available:
- View Full Context: See the complete activity thread
- Edit Comment: Modify the comment content
- Mark as Spam: Hide and mark as spam
- Mark as Clean: Approve and remove flags
- Delete: Permanently remove the comment
Managing Flagged Comments
Section titled “Managing Flagged Comments”Mark as Spam:
- Hides comment from all members
- Applies restrictions to comment author (if configured)
- Original activity post remains unaffected
- Can be restored if marked as spam by mistake
Mark as Clean:
- Removes all flags from the comment
- Makes comment visible again
- Removes author restrictions related to this flag
- Signals to reporters that content was reviewed
Delete Comment:
- Permanently removes the comment
- Original activity and other comments remain intact
- Cannot be undone
- Use for severe violations only
Notification Settings
Section titled “Notification Settings”Admin Notifications
Section titled “Admin Notifications”Configure in Moderation Pro → General Settings → Email and Notification:
For Comment Flags:
- Email Alerts: Receive email when comments are flagged
- BP Notifications: Get notification bell alerts
- Select Recipients: Choose which admins/moderators receive alerts
Notification Content:
- Comment text and context
- Reporter information
- Reason for report
- Parent activity link
- Direct link to moderation panel
Author Notifications
Section titled “Author Notifications”Comment authors receive:
- Alert that their comment was flagged
- Information about any restrictions applied
- Ability to edit or delete their comment
- Link to community guidelines
Best Practices
Section titled “Best Practices”For Community Members:
Section titled “For Community Members:”- Flag specific issues: Only report the problematic comment, not the entire activity
- Provide context: Use the reason categories to help admins understand the issue
- Don’t pile on: If a comment is already flagged, additional reports should only be made if you genuinely find it problematic
- Consider the context: Ensure you understand the full conversation before flagging
For Site Administrators:
Section titled “For Site Administrators:”- Respond quickly: Comments in active discussions need faster review than older content
- Review full context: Read the entire activity thread before making decisions
- Be proportionate: Not every flagged comment needs deletion - editing may suffice
- Track patterns: Users who repeatedly post flagged comments may need warnings or suspensions
- Set clear thresholds: Comments may need lower flag counts than activities (suggest 2-3 vs 3-5)
- Monitor false flags: Watch for members who flag comments they simply disagree with
Common Scenarios
Section titled “Common Scenarios”Scenario 1: Spam Comment
Section titled “Scenario 1: Spam Comment”Situation: Someone posts “Buy cheap products at [link]” on multiple activities.
Action:
- Members flag the spam comments
- After threshold is reached, comments auto-hide
- Admin reviews and marks all as spam
- User’s commenting ability is disabled
- Admin can delete all spam comments in bulk
Scenario 2: Heated Discussion
Section titled “Scenario 2: Heated Discussion”Situation: Two members are having a debate that gets heated, and comments are flagged.
Action:
- Admin reviews the full conversation thread
- Determines comments are passionate but not abusive
- Marks as “Clean” to remove flags
- May post a moderator comment asking for civil discussion
- Monitors the thread for further issues
Scenario 3: Personal Attack
Section titled “Scenario 3: Personal Attack”Situation: A comment contains a personal attack or insults toward another member.
Action:
- Comment is flagged immediately
- Admin receives notification and reviews
- Deletes the offensive comment
- Disables commenter’s ability to comment temporarily
- Sends warning message to the offender
- May notify the victim that action was taken
Scenario 4: Constructive Criticism Flagged
Section titled “Scenario 4: Constructive Criticism Flagged”Situation: A comment provides negative but constructive feedback and gets flagged.
Action:
- Admin reviews the comment
- Determines it’s legitimate criticism, not abuse
- Marks as “Clean”
- Educates reporters about the difference between disagreement and violations
- May adjust auto-hide threshold to prevent false positives
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Q: Flag button doesn’t appear on comments
- Ensure you’re logged in
- Check if Activity Comment moderation is enabled in settings
- Verify your user role has reporting permissions
- Some themes may hide the button - check with theme support
Q: Can I flag my own comment?
- No, the flag button doesn’t appear on your own comments
- You can edit or delete your own comments instead
Q: Comment disappeared after I flagged it
- This is normal if “Hide from reporter only” or “Hide from all” is enabled
- Admin will review and may restore if it’s not a violation
- Your flag has been recorded
Q: I’m seeing too many frivolous comment flags
- Increase the auto-moderation limit
- Review who’s making false reports and consider restricting their reporting ability
- Disable auto-hide and manually review all flags
- Educate community about proper flag usage
Q: How do I know if my comment was flagged?
- You’ll receive a BuddyPress notification (if enabled)
- You may receive an email notification
- The comment may be hidden from view
- Check your profile’s moderation reports section
Q: Can I appeal a flagged comment decision?
- Contact the site administrator directly
- Provide context or explanation
- Admins can review and restore comments if appropriate

Integration with Activity Moderation
Section titled “Integration with Activity Moderation”- Comments on flagged activities remain visible unless also flagged
- Flagging an activity doesn’t automatically flag its comments
- Each comment is moderated independently
- Admins can see both activity and comment flags in separate tabs
- Bulk actions can be applied to comments from flagged activities
