Solutions to common issues with BuddyPress Statistics.

Symptoms: Error message on activation, or the plugin doesn’t stay active.

Solutions:

  1. Check your WordPress and PHP versions

    • Requires WordPress 6.5+ and PHP 8.0+
    • Check in Tools > Site Health > Info
  2. Check that BuddyPress is active

    • BuddyPress or BuddyBoss Platform must be active first
    • Without it, the plugin deactivates itself and shows a notice that it requires BuddyPress
  3. Check for conflicts

    • Deactivate other plugins
    • Switch to a default theme
    • Activate BuddyPress Statistics
    • Reactivate other plugins one by one
  4. Check error logs

    • Turn on debug logging (see “Getting More Help” below)
    • Look in the debug log for errors

Symptoms: The Activity Log tab stays empty, charts show zeros.

Solutions:

  1. Deactivate and reactivate

    • Deactivating and reactivating the plugin re-runs its setup, which creates the activity log table if it is missing
  2. Check database permissions

    • Your database user needs permission to create tables
    • Contact your host if unsure

Symptoms: Charts are empty, cards show zeros.

Solutions:

  1. Wait for activity

    • Data appears after members log in and take part in the community
    • Allow a day or two for data to build up
  2. Backfill past activity

    • Go to Settings > Maintenance
    • Run Full historical indexing
  3. Check BuddyPress components

    • The Activity component must be active for most charts
    • The Groups component is needed for group statistics
    • Reports that need an inactive component show a notice naming it

Symptoms: Numbers don’t match expectations.

Solutions:

  1. Check the date range

    • Most charts have a Range, Period, or Date control
    • Data only shows for the selected period
  2. Check retention

    • Entries older than Settings > Display > Activity log retention are removed daily
    • Charts can’t show periods older than your retention setting
  3. Check page caching

    • Page caching may serve old frontend numbers
    • Exclude member profiles and group Statistics pages from page cache, or clear the cache

Symptoms: Dashboard takes a long time to load.

Solutions:

  1. Use object caching

    • Ask your host about Redis or Memcached
    • The plugin’s cached statistics then stay in memory
  2. Reduce data retention

    • Lower Activity log retention on Settings > Display
    • A smaller log means faster charts
  3. Check server resources

    • Large communities may need more PHP memory
    • Consider a hosting upgrade for very large communities

Symptoms: No Statistics tab on member profiles.

Solutions:

  1. Check the tab switch

    • Settings > General: “Show a Statistics tab on every member profile” must be ticked
  2. Check roles

    • Settings > Display > Who Sees the Profile Statistics Tab: tick the member’s role and click Save changes
    • Only the ticked roles get the tab; with every role unticked, only administrators see member Statistics tabs
  3. Check who is looking

    • Members see the tab on their own profile only, and only when logged in
    • Administrators see it on every profile
  4. Charts are not required

    • Since 2.0.1 the tab shows even with no profile chart selected. Update if you’re on 2.0.0.
  5. Check theme compatibility

    • Try a default theme; some themes hide profile tabs

Symptoms: No Statistics tab on group pages.

Solutions:

  1. Check the tab switch and charts

    • Settings > General: “Show a Statistics tab on every group” must be ticked
    • At least one chart must be ticked under Charts shown on groups. While none are selected, the tab is hidden.
  2. Check group role and privacy

    • Settings > Display > Who Sees the Group Statistics Tab: the viewer’s group role AND the group’s privacy level must both be ticked
  3. Check membership

    • Only members of the group see the tab. This includes site administrators, who need to join the group to see it.

Symptoms: The tab appears but shows no statistics.

Solutions:

  1. The member has no activity yet

    • New members may have nothing recorded yet
    • Activity is recorded from when the plugin was activated, unless you run Full historical indexing
  2. Check the browser console

    • Open your browser’s developer tools
    • Look for JavaScript errors from other plugins or the theme
  3. Check that the WordPress REST API works

    • The Statistics tabs load their data through the REST API
    • Security plugins that block the REST API for logged-in members stop the charts from loading
    • Tools > Site Health reports REST API problems

Symptoms: Widget doesn’t appear on the frontend.

Solutions:

  1. Check widget placement

    • Make sure the widget is in an active widget area
    • Make sure that widget area shows on the current page
  2. Check the context

    • BP Stats - Group Analytics only shows on a single group page, and only to group members and site administrators
    • BP Stats - Groups Overview needs the Groups component
    • BP Stats - Member Activity Summary shows a log-in message to logged-out visitors when there’s no member to show

Symptoms: The Member Activity Summary shows a different member than expected.

Solutions:

  1. Check “Show statistics for”

    • Auto-detect shows the profile owner on profiles, the author on author pages, and the current member elsewhere
    • Choose Always current logged-in user to always show the visitor’s own stats
  2. Allow for caching

    • Widget numbers are cached for a few minutes

Activity Log export has fewer rows than expected

Section titled “Activity Log export has fewer rows than expected”

Symptoms: The CSV or Excel file only contains some of the log.

Solutions:

  1. Show more rows first

    • Exports include the rows currently loaded in the table
    • Choose a larger entries-per-page value (or All), then export
  2. Check filters

    • Date, user, and topic filters also limit the export
    • Click Reset to clear filters for a full export

Symptoms: The file has missing or extra columns.

Solutions:

  1. Check column visibility
    • Only visible columns are exported
    • On the Users tab, open Column visibility and show the columns you need before exporting

Loco Translate shows “Partially configured”

Section titled “Loco Translate shows “Partially configured””

Symptoms: Loco Translate lists BuddyPress Statistics as “Partially configured”, or some text stays in English.

Solutions:

  1. Update the plugin

    • Update to 2.0.1 or later. It ships a single, complete buddypress-stats.pot template, and Loco Translate detects the plugin as fully configured.
  2. Sync existing translations

    • If you created your translation from the old bp-stats.pot template, open it in Loco Translate and click Sync, then translate any new strings and Save
    • Your existing translations are kept
  3. Check the file name

    • Translation files must use the buddypress-stats name, for example buddypress-stats-fr_FR.po

Symptoms: Slow database queries, high CPU usage.

Solutions:

  1. Use object caching

    • Reduces repeated queries
  2. Keep retention reasonable

    • A smaller activity log means faster queries
    • The plugin already optimizes its log table weekly
  3. Run indexing at quiet times

    • Full historical indexing is heavy on large communities
    • Run it when traffic is low

Symptoms: PHP memory exhausted errors.

Solutions:

  1. Increase PHP memory

    // In wp-config.php
    define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
  2. Contact your host

    • Ask for a higher PHP memory limit if the setting above has no effect

If these solutions don’t resolve your issue:

  1. Check the documentation

    • Review the relevant doc pages and the FAQ
  2. Turn on debug logging

    // In wp-config.php
    define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
    define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
  3. Contact support
