Private Messages
Section titled “Private Messages”BuddyPress Giphy can add the GIF button to BuddyPress private message forms. This is off by default and must be turned on in settings.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- The Private messages toggle must be on in Settings > General.
- A valid API key must be saved for the active GIF provider.
- The member’s WordPress profile must have the visual (rich text) editor enabled. Members who have switched off the visual editor in their profile settings will not see the GIF button.
Where the button appears
Section titled “Where the button appears”When the toggle is on and the visual editor is active for the member, the GIF button is added to the TinyMCE toolbar in the message editor. With Youzify active, the button also appears in the Youzify compose and reply message boxes.
Sending a GIF in a message
Section titled “Sending a GIF in a message”- Go to Messages > Compose or open an existing thread.
- Click the GIF icon in the message editor toolbar.
- A popup window opens showing trending GIFs. Type a search term to narrow results.
- Click a GIF to insert it into the message body.
- Add any text and send the message.
The recipient sees the GIF displayed inline in the message thread.
Limitations
Section titled “Limitations”- GIFs in messages are embedded as an image directly in the message content. They are not stored as message meta.
- The GIF button only appears when the visual editor is active for the composing member. Members who prefer the plain text editor will not see it.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”If the button does not appear or the picker shows an error, see Troubleshooting. The most common cause in messages is a member who has the visual editor disabled in their WordPress profile.
