Section titled “Features”BuddyPress Giphy adds a GIF picker to the areas of your community where members write. Members can search a GIF library and insert an animated GIF into their post, with no file upload required, because GIFs stay hosted on the provider’s servers.
Where GIFs can appear
Section titled “Where GIFs can appear”Depending on which areas you enable in settings, members can attach a GIF in:
- Activity posts: the main “What’s new?” composer on the activity stream, profile pages, and group pages.
- Activity comments: the reply form under any activity item.
- Private messages: the compose and reply forms in BuddyPress Messages (with the visual editor enabled).
- bbPress topics and replies: the TinyMCE editor in forum topics and replies (when bbPress is active).
Each area has its own toggle in Settings > General. Turn them on or off independently.
How the GIF picker works
Section titled “How the GIF picker works”When the GIF button is enabled and a valid API key is configured, members see a small GIF icon in the post form toolbar. Clicking the icon opens a dropdown panel. The panel shows trending GIFs immediately, and members can type a search term to update it with matching results.
Selecting a GIF closes the dropdown and attaches a preview below the text box. The member can remove the GIF by clicking the X overlay on the preview, or submit the post with the GIF attached.
A GIF can be posted without any caption text. The rendered post shows the GIF inline under the activity content.
Provider options
Section titled “Provider options”The plugin supports two GIF providers: GIPHY and Klipy. You choose one in Settings > General, and both cannot run at once. The choice affects which API key you need, the content filtering options available, and the GIF rendition (size/format) options available.

What happens when no API key is set
Section titled “What happens when no API key is set”If no API key is configured for the active provider, the GIF picker still renders but shows an error when members open it. No GIFs load until a valid key is saved. See Troubleshooting for the exact error conditions and how to resolve them.
