General Settings – BP Anonymous Activity

Get Started

The Role-Based Anonymous Posting feature allows administrators to control and customize anonymous activity posting on a BuddyPress or BuddyBoss site.

Overview

Anonymous posting enables users to share updates or activities without revealing their identities. This feature is particularly useful for creating safe, non-judgmental spaces where users can share sensitive or personal information. With this functionality, site admins can define:

  • Who can post anonymously (based on roles).
  • Where anonymous posting is allowed.
  • How anonymous posts appear visually.

How to Configure Role-Based Anonymous Posting

  1. Navigate to the WB Plugins > Anonymous Activity in the admin dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the General Setting section.
  3. Adjust the following according to your needs:
    • Select user roles permitted to post anonymously.
    • Exclude any member types from anonymous posting.
    • Enable anonymous activity in desired areas (groups, site-wide, or profiles).
    • Upload a custom default Gravatar image for anonymous posts.
  4. Save changes to apply the configurations.

Assign User Roles for Anonymous Posting

This option allows admins to select specific WordPress user roles that can post anonymously. For example:

  • Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber: Check the roles that you want to grant permission for anonymous posting.

Only users with these selected roles will see the option to post anonymously.

Exclude Member Types from Anonymous Posting

You can exclude specific BuddyPress member types from posting anonymously.

  • None: No exclusions; all member types linked to permitted roles can post anonymously.
  • Custom Member Types: If specific types (e.g., “Students” or “Guests”) are excluded, they will not have access to the anonymous posting feature.

Enable Anonymous Activity in Specific Areas

Admins can enable or disable anonymous posting in different parts of the site:

  • Groups Anonymous Activity: Allow anonymous posting within group activity feeds.
  • Site-Wide Anonymous Activity: Enable anonymous posting in the main activity feed visible site-wide.
  • Profile Anonymous Activity: Let users post anonymously on their individual profile activity feed.
  • Anonymous Comment: Allow users to post comments anonymously on group activities and across the entire site.

These options provide flexibility to control where anonymous posts are permitted, enhancing privacy and site moderation.

Add Default Gravatar for Anonymous Posts

When a user posts anonymously, their personal profile picture (Gravatar) is hidden. Instead, a default anonymous image is used. Admins can:

  • Upload a custom image to represent anonymous users.
  • Use this image to maintain a consistent, neutral appearance for all anonymous posts.

Key Benefits

  • Privacy Control: Allows users to share sensitive updates without identity exposure.
  • Role-Based Permissions: Prevents misuse by restricting anonymous posting to trusted roles.
  • Customizability: Lets admins decide where and how anonymous posting works.
  • Visual Clarity: Ensures anonymous posts are visually distinct using a default Gravatar.

This feature is ideal for communities focused on open discussions, sensitive topics, or confidential updates, fostering a supportive and controlled environment.
