Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BuddyPress Hashtags. For fixes to specific problems, see Troubleshooting.

Q: Do hashtags work immediately after activation?

Yes. Once activated, hashtags work automatically in all enabled content types. No additional configuration is required.

Q: Can users see hashtags from before the plugin was installed?

No, only hashtags created after plugin activation are detected. You can edit old posts to add hashtags retroactively.

Q: Do I need BuddyPress for this plugin?

You need either BuddyPress or bbPress (or both). If neither is active, the plugin deactivates itself automatically and shows an admin notice.

Q: What content types support hashtags?

  • BuddyPress activities and activity comments
  • WordPress posts, pages, and comments
  • bbPress forum topics and replies

Individual content types can be enabled or disabled from the General tab.

Q: Can I use spaces in hashtags?

No. A space ends the hashtag. Use underscores or hyphens instead:

  • #social media is read as just #social
  • #social_media and #social-media both work correctly

Q: Are hashtags case-sensitive?

No. #WordPress, #wordpress, and #WORDPRESS all lead to the same content page.

Q: Can I use numbers in hashtags?

Yes. #web3, #2024goals, and #learn2code are valid hashtags. A purely numeric hashtag (for example #123) is ignored.

Q: What characters are allowed in hashtags?

Letters, numbers, underscores (_), and hyphens (-).

  • Valid: #web-design, #year_2024, #SEO
  • Invalid: #hello!, #test@home, #what?

Q: Can I use non-English characters or emoji in hashtags?

Non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, and others) are supported when you turn on “International language support” in the General tab. Note: enabling this option disables hashtag length limits, since character counts vary across writing systems. Emoji characters are never converted to hashtags, even with this option on.

Q: What are the default length limits?

By default, hashtags must be between 3 and 16 characters. You can change both limits in the General tab (the “Shortest hashtag” and “Longest hashtag” fields).

Q: What happens to a hashtag that is too short or too long?

It is treated as plain text. The # symbol is not converted to a clickable link, and the hashtag is not recorded in the database.

Q: Does enabling International language support affect length limits?

Yes. Length restrictions are automatically disabled when International language support is on.

Q: How do I follow a hashtag?

Go to Profile > Settings > Follow Hashtags and add the tag there (no # needed). You can follow and unfollow hashtags from the same screen.

Q: How do I unfollow a hashtag?

Go to Profile > Settings > Follow Hashtags, find the hashtag, and click Unfollow.

Q: Where do I see content from hashtags I follow?

Go to your profile, open the Activity nav, and click the “Followed Hashtags” sub-tab. This tab only appears when the “Let members follow hashtags” setting is on and the BuddyPress Activity component is active.

Q: Can I follow a hashtag that does not exist yet?

No. You can only follow hashtags that have been used at least once.

Q: Can I prevent users from creating certain hashtags?

Yes, using the “Block inappropriate hashtags” setting in the General tab. This option only appears when the BuddyPress Profanity plugin is also active. When enabled, any word on the profanity list will not become a clickable hashtag - it stays as plain text and is not recorded.

Q: How do I delete a single hashtag?

Go to WB Plugins > BP Hashtags > Manage. Find the hashtag in the list and click Delete in the Actions column. For Activity-type hashtags, a confirmation dialog warns that the associated BuddyPress activities will also be deleted.

Q: How do I bulk delete hashtags?

In the Manage tab:

  1. Select hashtags using the checkboxes
  2. Open the “Bulk actions” dropdown and choose “Delete selected”
  3. Click “Apply”
  4. Confirm the deletion

Warning: Deleting an Activity-type hashtag also permanently deletes all BuddyPress activities that contain it. For Posts, Pages, and bbPress hashtags, only the index entry is removed - the original content is unchanged.

Q: Can I export selected hashtags from the Manage tab?

Yes. The Manage tab’s “Bulk actions” dropdown includes both “Export selected” and “Delete selected”. Choose “Export selected” with hashtags checked and click “Apply” to download a CSV of just those hashtags. For a full export, the Analytics tab has two buttons: “Export All Hashtags” (CSV of every hashtag with type and count) and “Export Statistics Summary” (a summary of the analytics shown on that page).

Q: How do I completely reset the hashtag database?

Go to WB Plugins > BP Hashtags > Manage and click “Reset All Hashtag Data” at the bottom of the page. This clears all hashtag counts and index entries. Your original content (activities, posts, forum topics) is preserved, but all hashtag tracking data is lost and cannot be recovered.

Q: Can I change the hashtag color or styling?

Yes, using custom CSS. All hashtag links use the class .hashtag.

Q: Do hashtags affect SEO?

Hashtags create internal links between related content, which can help search engines understand topical relationships across your site.
