Targeting and Display Rules

Get Started

Control exactly where and when your ads appear using targeting options and display rules. This guide covers all available targeting features in WB Ad Manager.

Display Rules

Display rules determine which pages show your ads. You can choose between two modes:

All Pages (with Exclusions)

Show the ad everywhere except specific exclusions:

  • Exclude Posts – Select specific posts to hide the ad
  • Exclude Categories – Hide from certain category pages and posts
  • Exclude Tags – Hide from certain tag pages and posts
  • Exclude Page Types – Hide from front page, blog, archives, search, 404

Specific Pages Only

Show the ad only on selected pages:

  • Post Types – Show only on posts, pages, or custom post types
  • Specific Posts/Pages – Select individual posts or pages
  • Categories – Show on posts in categories or category archives
  • Tags – Show on posts with tags or tag archives
  • Page Types – Front page, blog, singular, archive, search, 404

Device Targeting

Show ads only on specific device types:

Device Description
Desktop Traditional computers and laptops
Tablet iPad, Android tablets, and similar devices
Mobile Smartphones and small mobile devices

Select one or more devices. If no devices are selected, the ad shows on all devices.

Use Cases

  • Show mobile-specific ads with app download links
  • Display larger banners only on desktop
  • Use different ad sizes for different screens

User Targeting

User Status

Option Description
All Users Show to everyone (default)
Logged In Only Only show to registered, logged-in users
Logged Out Only Only show to visitors who aren’t logged in

User Roles

When targeting logged-in users, you can further refine by role:

  • Administrator
  • Editor
  • Author
  • Contributor
  • Subscriber
  • Custom roles (if any exist)

Geo Targeting

Target visitors by geographic location using IP geolocation.

Setup

  1. Go to WB Ad Manager → Settings → Geo Targeting
  2. Select a geolocation provider
  3. Enter API key if required
  4. Save settings

Supported Providers

Provider Free Tier Notes
ip-api.com Yes (45 req/min) No API key required
ipinfo.io Yes (50k/month) Free API key available
ipapi.co Yes (1k/day) No API key required

Targeting Options

  • Countries – Select one or more countries to target
  • Include/Exclude Mode – Show only in selected countries OR show everywhere except selected countries

Accuracy Note

IP-based geolocation is typically 95-99% accurate at the country level. Accuracy decreases for city-level targeting. VPN users may see ads targeted to their VPN exit location.

Schedule Targeting

Control when ads are active:

Date Range

Setting Description
Start Date Ad becomes active on this date
End Date Ad stops showing after this date

Day of Week

Select specific days to show the ad (e.g., only weekdays, only weekends).

Time of Day

Set a time range when the ad should be active (e.g., 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM).

Frequency Control

Limit how often a visitor sees the same ad:

Setting Description
Max Impressions Maximum times to show the ad per session
Session Duration How long before the counter resets

This helps prevent ad fatigue and improves user experience while maintaining GDPR compliance through anonymized tracking.
