Getting Started

Requirements

  • WordPress 5.0 or higher
  • BuddyPress 5.0 or higher
  • PHP 7.2 or higher
  • MySQL 5.6 or higher

Installation

  1. Upload the plugin files to /wp-content/plugins/buddypress-reactions/
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Navigate to BuddyPress → Reactions to configure settings

Using Reactions

For Site Members

Adding a Reaction

  1. Login Required: You must be logged in to add reactions
  2. Find the React Button: Look for the “React” button below activities, comments, or forum posts
  3. Choose an Emoji:
    • Hover over or click the React button
    • A panel of 8 default emojis will appear
    • Click on any emoji to add your reaction
  4. Instant Feedback: Your reaction is saved immediately

Changing Your Reaction

  1. Click the React button again
  2. Select a different emoji
  3. Your previous reaction is automatically replaced

Removing Your Reaction

  1. Click on the emoji you previously selected
  2. Your reaction will be removed

Viewing Who Reacted

  1. Look for the reaction counts below posts
  2. Hover over an emoji to see who reacted with it
  3. Click on the count to see all users who reacted

Admin Dashboard

Access the reactions admin area at WordPress Admin → Wbcom Designs→ BP Reactions

1. My Reactions

  • View and manage reaction shortcodes
  • See which emojis are assigned to each area
  • Edit reaction sets for different content types

2. Emojis

  • View all 200 available emojis
  • See emoji names and preview images
  • All emojis are pre-installed and ready to use

3. BP Integration

Configure reactions for BuddyPress components:

Activity Stream Settings

  • ✅ Enable reactions on activities
  • ✅ Enable reactions on activity comments
  • ✅ Hide default Like/Favorite button (optional)

Notification Settings

  • ✅ Send notifications for reactions

Maintenance Tools

  • 🔧 Fix Broken Emojis button – Repairs missing or broken emoji images

Configure reactions for bbPress forums:

Settings Configuration

Default Settings

The plugin comes pre-configured with optimal settings:

  • Reactions enabled for all content types
  • 8 popular emojis selected as defaults
  • Notifications enabled
  • Animations enabled

Customizing Reaction Sets

Each content type can have different emoji selections:

  1. Activity Reactions: Default set of 8 emojis
  2. Comment Reactions: Same as activities by default
  3. Forum Reactions: Uses the same emoji set

Three widgets are available:

  2. Modern Reactions Widget – Modern UI for reactions
  3. Last 3 Months Stats – Recent reaction trends

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

Broken Emoji Images (404 Errors)

Solution:

  1. Go to WordPress Admin → Wbcom Designs → BP Integration
  2. Find the “Maintenance” section
  3. Click “Fix Emojis” button
  4. Wait for the process to complete

Reactions Not Showing

Check:

  • You are logged in (reactions require authentication)
  • Reactions are enabled in settings
  • JavaScript is not blocked in your browser
  • Clear browser cache and reload

Can’t Click on Reactions

Possible Causes:

  • Not logged in (login required)
  • JavaScript errors (check browser console)
  • Theme compatibility issues

Reactions Not Working in Groups

Solution: This has been fixed in the latest version. Clear your cache.

Performance Tips
