Creating Hashtags
Simply type the # symbol followed by your keyword in any supported content area:
- BuddyPress activity updates
- BuddyPress activity comments
- bbPress forum topics
- bbPress replies
- WordPress posts and pages
- WordPress comments
Examples:

Hashtag Format Rules
Allowed Characters

| Underscores (_) | Exclamation marks |
| Hyphens (-) | Question marks |
| Unicode characters* | Other special characters |
*Unicode characters require “International Language Support” to be enabled.

Invalid Examples
#hello world– Space ends the hashtag (becomes just #hello)#test!– Exclamation mark not allowed#what?– Question mark not allowed
Case Sensitivity
Hashtags are NOT case-sensitive. All these lead to the same hashtag page:
#WordPress#wordpress#WORDPRESS#wordPress
The system treats them all as the same hashtag and shows all posts using any variation.
Length Limits
Default settings:
- Minimum: 3 characters
- Maximum: 16 characters
Administrators can adjust these limits in Settings > General.
Best Practices
- Use 2-5 hashtags per post – Don’t overdo it
- Mix popular and niche hashtags – Balance visibility and specificity
- Stay on topic – Use hashtags relevant to your content
- Be consistent – Use the same hashtags for similar content
