  • BuddyPress activity comments
  • bbPress forum topics
  • bbPress replies
  • WordPress posts and pages
  • WordPress comments

Need help with #BuddyPress configuration

Hashtag Format Rules

Allowed Characters

Allowed Not Allowed
Letters (a-z, A-Z) Spaces
Numbers (0-9) Periods
Underscores (_) Exclamation marks
Hyphens (-) Question marks
Unicode characters* Other special characters

*Unicode characters require “International Language Support” to be enabled.

Valid Examples

  • #WordPress – Standard hashtag
  • #web_design – With underscore
  • #social-media – With hyphen
  • #2024goals – With numbers
  • #learn2code – Mixed letters and numbers

Invalid Examples

  • #hello world – Space ends the hashtag (becomes just #hello)
  • #test! – Exclamation mark not allowed
  • #what? – Question mark not allowed

Case Sensitivity

Hashtags are NOT case-sensitive. All these lead to the same hashtag page:

  • #WordPress
  • #wordpress
  • #WORDPRESS
  • #wordPress

The system treats them all as the same hashtag and shows all posts using any variation.

Length Limits

Default settings:

  • Minimum: 3 characters
  • Maximum: 16 characters

Administrators can adjust these limits in Settings > General.

Best Practices

  1. Use 2-5 hashtags per post – Don’t overdo it
  2. Mix popular and niche hashtags – Balance visibility and specificity
  3. Stay on topic – Use hashtags relevant to your content
  4. Be consistent – Use the same hashtags for similar content
