Getting Started

Q: Do hashtags work immediately after activation?

Yes. Once activated, hashtags work automatically in all enabled content types. No additional configuration required.

Q: Do I need BuddyPress for this plugin?

You need either BuddyPress OR bbPress. The plugin supports BuddyPress only, bbPress only, both together, or either one plus WordPress blog features.

Hashtag Format

Q: Can I use spaces in hashtags?

No. Spaces end the hashtag. Use underscores or hyphens instead: #social_media or #social-media.

Q: Are hashtags case-sensitive?

No. #WordPress, #wordpress, and #WORDPRESS all lead to the same hashtag page showing all variations.

Q: Can I use emoji in hashtags?

Yes, if you enable “International Language Support” in General Settings.

Following Hashtags

Q: How do I unfollow a hashtag?

Go to Profile > Settings > Hashtags, find the hashtag, and click “Unfollow” or the delete icon.

Q: Where do I see content from hashtags I follow?

Go to your profile and click the “Followed Hashtags” tab.

Administration

Q: How do I delete a hashtag completely?

Go to WB Plugins > BuddyPress Hashtag > Manage. Search and delete. This removes it from the database but doesn’t modify existing posts.

Q: Can I change the hashtag color or styling?

Yes, use custom CSS. Hashtags use the class .hashtag.

Troubleshooting

Hashtags Not Appearing as Links

Possible Causes & Solutions:

  1. Feature Disabled – Check: WB Plugins > BuddyPress Hashtag > General. Ensure the content type is enabled.
  2. Hashtag Too Short/Long – Check: General Settings > Min/Max Characters. Ensure your hashtag meets length requirements.
  3. Special Characters Used – Remove spaces, periods, exclamation marks. Use only letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens.
  4. Theme Conflict – Try switching to a default WordPress theme. If hashtags work, contact theme support.
  5. Cache Issue – Clear your caching plugin cache and browser cache.

Autocomplete Not Working

  1. Check Feature is Enabled in General Settings
  2. Try a different browser or disable browser extensions
  3. Check browser console for JavaScript errors (F12 > Console)
  4. Disable other plugins temporarily to identify conflicts

Widget Not Displaying

  1. Check limit is not set to 0
  2. Ensure enough hashtags exist to display
  3. Verify sidebar is active on the page
  4. Create some content with hashtags first
