Default Filter Settings – BuddyPress Activity Filter

Get Started
The BuddyPress Default Filter Settings feature helps you configure default activity filters for both site-wide and profile-specific activities. For site-wide activity, you can set a default filter to display specific types of activities, such as friendships or updates, on the main activity page. Similarly, for individual profiles, you can define which types of activities (e.g., comments or profile updates) appear by default when viewing a member’s profile. These settings ensure that the most relevant content is highlighted, making it easier for users to engage with activities tailored to their interests.

The Default Filter Settings feature allows you to configure the default activity filters for your BuddyPress site’s site-wide and profile-specific activities.

Site-Wide Activity Filter

This setting lets you choose which type of activity is shown by default on the main site activity page. For example, you can set it to display activities related to friendships, posts, or updates. Users will see this filter applied when they visit the site-wide activity feed.

Profile Activity Filter

This option allows you to define the default filter for activities that appear on individual member profile pages. When members or visitors view a profile, the activity feed will automatically show specific types of actions (such as friendships, updates, or comments) according to the filter set here.

These settings ensure that the most relevant activities are highlighted by default, making it easier for users to engage with content tailored to the context.

Advantages:

Improved User Experience

Personalization: By setting relevant default filters (e.g., showing friendships or comments), users see content that matters most to them as soon as they visit the activity feed. This reduces the need to manually filter activities and helps users engage more quickly with the community.

Streamlined Navigation: Users get a more organized and focused activity feed, making it easier to browse relevant interactions without being overwhelmed by all activity types.

Content Prioritization

Highlight Important Interactions: Site admins can ensure that specific types of activities (e.g., friendships or posts) are prioritized and highlighted. For example, if community-building through connections is important, you can set friendship updates as the default filter.

Context-Aware Content: Profile-specific filters allow users to see the most pertinent activities related to a particular member when visiting their profile. This helps foster connections by showcasing actions relevant to individual users, like profile updates or messages.
