Find references quickly using search, filters, and advanced queries. Academic References provides multiple ways to locate sources in your library.
Quick Search
The search box in References > All References searches:
- Title
- Authors
- Abstract
- DOI
- Journal/Publisher name
Basic Search
Type any word or phrase:
climate change
Returns references containing “climate” and “change” anywhere in searchable fields.
Exact Phrase
Use quotes for exact matching:
"climate change"
Returns only references with the exact phrase.
Author Search
Search by author name:
Smith
Returns references where any author’s name contains “Smith.”
DOI Search
Search by partial or complete DOI:
10.1038
Returns all Nature Publishing Group references (DOIs starting with 10.1038).
Filter Panel
Above the reference list, use dropdown filters:

Filter by Category
Select from your category hierarchy.
Filter by Date Added
- All dates
- Current month
- Previous months (listed)

Combining Filters
Filters work together:
- Select Type: Article
- Select Category: Biology
- Search: “Smith”
Result: Articles in Biology category with “Smith” in any field.
Advanced Search
Access via the Advanced Search link or References > Search.
Field-Specific Search
Search within specific fields:

Search Operators
AND (default):
climate AND biodiversity
Both terms must appear.
OR:
climate OR weather
Either term can appear.
NOT:
climate NOT politics
First term present, second absent.
Parentheses:
(climate OR weather) AND biodiversity
Group terms for complex queries.
Year Range
Find references from a specific period:
- Published between: 2018 – 2024
- Published before: 2000
- Published after: 2020
Citation Count
Filter by how often referenced in your posts:
- Never cited
- Cited at least once
- Cited more than 5 times
Saved Searches
Save frequently used searches:
- Perform a search with all filters
- Click Save Search
- Name your search
- Access later from Saved Searches dropdown
Example Saved Searches
- “Recent methodology papers” – Type: Article, Category: Methodology, Year: 2022-2024
- “Uncited books” – Type: Book, Citation count: 0
- “My author papers” – Author: [your name]
Sorting Results
Click column headers to sort:

Duplicate Detection
Find potential duplicates:
- Go to References > Tools > Find Duplicates
- Review matches based on:
- Merge or delete duplicates
Bulk Operations
After searching, perform bulk actions:
- Select references (checkboxes)
- Choose action:

If public references are enabled, visitors can search:

- Go to Appearance > Widgets
- Add Reference Search widget
- Configure options

Search Tips
Finding a specific paper:
- Try DOI first (most precise)
- Then try exact title in quotes
- Then try author + distinctive word
Finding related papers:
- Search by topic keyword
- Filter by type and year
- Browse category archives
Finding gaps:
- Search for methodology types
- Filter by year range
- Identify missing coverage
Troubleshooting
No results found
- Check spelling
- Try broader terms
- Remove some filters
- Check reference is published (not draft)
Too many results
- Add more specific terms
- Use exact phrase quotes
- Add type or category filter
Wrong results
- Use field-specific search
- Exclude irrelevant terms with NOT
- Check you’re searching the right field
Search slow
- Large libraries need database optimization
- Contact host about MySQL performance
- Consider using object caching
